Locally Grown

We started our weekend fun early this week and headed over to some friends' house on Thursday evening to let our children play together and to have some time to converse with other grown-ups. The food was delicious and the company was terrific. We took some cute pictures, but since I do not post pictures of other people's kids online, you'll just have to imagine all the bubble-blowing, watermelon-eating, sand-flinging, tag-playing fun they had! :)

On Saturday we took the kids to the first local organic farm festival. It was held at the same location as a huge festival that takes place later this month, but with smaller crowds and fewer vendors, it turned out to be a much more relaxing event and a great way to spend a weekend afternoon.

The kids first scoped out the petting zoo. They had all sorts of farm animals and S and G crowded around their cages in excitement.
There were goats,
turkeys, pigs, geese, and a horse!
Baby C seemed a little confused by the animals. It's almost as if he were thinking "Wait a second, I thought you were  creatures made up for children's books!"
The hen had more chicks than she could handle - I often know how she feels. :)
They loved the horse. He was skeptical.
Then the farmer gathered the kids together for a sack race. G won! Everyone got a prize.
Ready to go!
A golden horseshoe!
We moseyed down to the organic marketplace, bought each of the older kids a cucumber to munch on (which they thought was great), sampled and then bought some delicious cheese, let the kids run around on the playground for a while, toured the exhibits (they had free organic milk boxes and yogurt for the kids!), then ran through a sudden downpour back to the car. We had a great time, and did I mention that the event was free?! I love this town and its endless supply of cheap summer entertainment. Plus the festival helps illustrate to the kids what we're talking about when we discuss the importance of supporting local businesses, sustainable farming, or just simply being good stewards of God's creation.

Having another fun Saturday afternoon
Have a great weekend everyone!
